The Eyre Affair by Jasper
Fforde
I’m always delighted to discover a new author who has
already written a few books so I don’t have to wait to read the next one! My latest discovery is Jasper Fforde – why I
have I not found his work before?
I have always had a soft spot for the surreal (which is
probably why I enjoy Terry Pratchett so much) and this is very surreal. The word that
sprang to mind while I was reading was ‘quirky’, and I noticed that word in the
many pages of rave reviews at the front of the book.
The storyline is really too complicated to begin to explain;
the Amazon review sums it up fairly accurately, whilst describing it as ‘outrageous’
and ‘inventive’, sentiments I agree with wholeheartedly. Despite the bizarreness of the plot, the characters
are very believable and the main character, Thursday, is superb. Definitely high on my recommended list!
